Late-night porch-sittin' whiskey-sippin' cowboy-kissin' music from
Northwest Country Queen, Lana Rebel
Although Lana started her musical adventures in Portland, Oregon playing
bass in what she describes as a sludgy, noisy, instrumental math-metal
band called Last Of The Juanitas it wasn't until she started strumming
along to the likes of Willie Nelson (an old family friend) and Lefty
Frizzell that she found her true calling. This switch served well and her new band
The Juanita Family were picked up by BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens
(who saw her busking the streets of Austin, Texas during SXSW) and
subsequently invited them over to the UK to record a session for the BBC at Maida
Vale. Regular spins on late night Radio 1 were soon followed by plays courtesy
of Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 and after a whiskey-fuelled busking trip across
Ireland even more from Ralph McLean on BBC Ulster.
Now backed up by a new band - The Broken Promises and with an album
produced by Black Heart Processions' Pall Jenkins, Lana is all set to
establish herself as one of modern country music's foremost writers.
"Lana Rebel is the badass matriarch of local dustbowl country. Sounding
like the coal miner's daughter trapped in a collapsed mine, the music of
Rebel is gorgeous and morose, a sad waltz of cowgirl balladry that can't
be cured by even the most generous whiskey pour" - The Portland Mercury
